Key Responsibilities
- Review and update HR policies and procedures to ensure compliance with Canadian employment laws and Law Society of Ontario (LSO) regulations.
- Manage recruitment, onboarding, and offboarding processes for legal and support staff, aligned with firm values and DEI best practices.
- Oversee payroll, group benefits, RRSPs, and timekeeping, with an understanding of legal industry compensation and billable hour structures.
- Act as the main point of contact for employee relations, dispute resolution, and internal investigations.
- Provide regular reports and strategic HR support to firm leadership on performance management, partner track, and professional development.
- Coordinate licensing, CPD, and compliance with LSO and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain accurate personnel records in compliance with privacy and data standards.
- Lead DEI, wellness, and cultural initiatives to support a positive workplace environment.
- Support organizational changes, succession planning, and staffing strategy.
- Directly manage legal assistants and law clerks.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of progressive HR experience in a Canadian law firm, with relevant HR certifications (e.g. CHRP, CHRL).
- Strong knowledge of Ontario employment legislation and legal industry compliance requirements (LSO, CPD, confidentiality).
- Experience building or improving HR processes in mid-sized organizations.
- Excellent communication, discretion, and ability to build trust across all levels of the firm.
- Proficiency with payroll and HRIS systems; experience with billable hour tracking is an asset.
