Key Responsibilities
- Communicate with lawyers, team members, clients and other professionals to discuss assigned cases and projects;
- Case file management (create, organize, track and maintain files; monitor calendars, document actions; update file database);
- Analyze and summarize invoices and compile detailed damages briefs in large, complex property loss cases;
- Review technical, financial and business records to organize documents and prepare event chronologies;
- Prepare freedom of information requests to all levels of government entities across all provinces;
- Review discovery transcripts to prepare undertaking/refusals charts;
- Retrieve court decisions from CanLii, Westlaw and other case databases to prepare briefs of authorities for court submissions;
- Work with case files to identify documents and other exhibits for lawyers on an as-needed basis;
- Work with clients to tabulate and prepare charts of answers to undertakings and refusals given during examination for discovery;
- Perform reviewing and editing of court forms prepared by lawyers for compliance with court rules typographical errors;
- Obtain corporate searches and title searches for parties worldwide, and have familiarity with the results sufficient to research and identify party status;
- Perform online investigations and research social media platforms to identify and contact potential witnesses;
- Draft and serve subpoenas;
- E-filing in Provincial Courts and Federal Court.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years as a Process Server, Litigation Law Clerk/Paralegal role, or equivalent is preferred;
- Law Clerk/Paralegal diploma and university education is an asset;
- Solid working knowledge of the Rules of Civil Litigation, knowing what needs to be filed and when;
- Proven writing skills, with the ability to draft various legal documents;
- Experience in a hybrid, fast-paced, digital environment supporting multiple lawyers and files;
- Basic math skills – ability to calculate percentages for taxing and pro-rating client invoices and fees;
- Familiarity with Relativity, ACL, Excel, and TextMap is an asset
